Picnic sets & hampers
The Victorians and Edwardians loved picnics and the laviousness of the food was only restricted by the budget. Pies, cold meats, and desserts were favourite fare - all wrapped up in tablecloths and packed in traditional wicker hampers. Most just packed their ordinary china, but the lucky few might have had hampers packed with little enamel sandwich boxes and silver plated containers, perhaps trimmed with wicker handles.
With the increased popularity of the motor car came the picnic case and Bakerlte flasks, plates and containers. Cream and green were popular colours and there were little jars for milk, sugar, butter and preserves.
By the fifties, some sets had floral designs on them, and popular brands Brexton and Sirram would include china from manufacturers like Barker Bros with their designs Offbeat and Fiesta.
