Gardening books
Long before the arrival of the supermarket and the plentiful supply of fruit and veg all the year round, the kitchen garden was important to the house.
Before the First World War, every large house could expect the gardeners to produce most of what the cook required. But when those gardeners failed to come back from war, kitchen gardens fell into disrepair - many never to see production again.
Many small householders grew their own, but by the outbreak of World War Two, everyone was expected to turn their gardens over to food production. The Ministry of Food provided guidance and every inch of garden, park and farmland needed to be productive.
With the 'grow your own' movement so popular now, it's great to reflect on how our forebears did it !
