Baskets

Long before the invention of the carrier bag, every housewife would have had a shopping basket for the daily shopping trip.

Early ones were made from cane and rattan. They could be almost any shape from square and oblong through to round and oval. Post war, plastic stripes would be woven into the handles and around the outside of the basket.

By the sixties, shopping baskets had become universally wicker and oval, punctuated only by the occasion round bamboo one.

With shopping habits changing and more people buying little and often from their convenience store, the shopping basket is making a come back. But it's just as likely to be making a statement at home, filled with flowers, throws or other decorative items.

And if you have a bike, then you can strap a bicycle basket o your handle bars.
