Saffron View full size

Saffron

Saffron was launched after the huge success of Heirloom. Also designed by John Clappison, it first appeared in 1970. With its design focussed on a myriad of daisies, its orange and tan shade epitomised the decade.

The shape reflected the hugely popular Heirloom and the range was largely the same. From plates, cups and saucers through to egg cups, vegetable dishes and of course, tea and coffee pots.

Saffron also provided a solid range of storage jars in three sizes to accomodate most ingredients. The largest are terrific for flour and biscuits - even without the lettering. The small sizes were mainly lettered with tea, coffee and sugar, although plain ones are equally handy for other ingredients such as pasta, rice and lentils.

Despite the popularity of Hornsea pottery, by the end of the seventies its profits had plummeted and it went from crisis to crisis until the receivers went in, in 2000.
