Modest kitchen makeovers for 2023

With the cost of living crisis, any plans for a new kitchen may have to go on hold for many people. But if you want a little makeover what can you do ?

The most obvious answer is a splash of colour on the walls or cupboards. But what are the trends for 2023 ?

Colour experts, the Pantone Colour Institute, see two different trends at the opposite end of the spectrum. On one hand they are predicting bold and brash colours that embrace life full of vigour and on the other they see the need for neutral and natural tones to satisfy the need for harmony and tranquility.

Last year, pictures abounded of kitchens in Farrow & Ball’s Plaster Pink, but their new Templeton Pink is picking up on the trend for a bolder interpretation. The use of pink in a kitchen divided opinion, but it created warmth that greys never could. But the kitchen is the heart of the home - particularly a period one - and in times of uncertainty is the place we are all drawn to for comfort and reassurance.

If painting your walls pink isn’t resonating with you, you considering giving the kitchen a lift by painting cabinets. Blue has been a popular colour for a while, but designers are becoming braver with the use of deep inky blues. Little Greene’s Hicks Blue provides a startling contrast with the white of the Belfast sink, sash window and accessories.

If you’re not ready for pink on the walls or ink blue on the cupboards, you could play safe with Dulux’s colour of the year: Inspired by the hues of harvested crops, Wild Wonder is a warm neutral which they hope will create a sense of energy and positivity.

With open shelving and pantries becoming more and more of a trend, you could erect some purpose built shelves like these traditional blue ones or simply take the doors off some existing wall cabinets.

Small kitchens could benefit from using a laundry maid rack to hang pots and pans whilst creating a centre piece.

Of course, if you don’t feel like painting or adding shelving, you could just look at re accessorising the kitchen. A new light or even new cabinet handles can be just enough to lift a room.

It is a well known fact that in times of crisis we become nostalgic and look back to our past to hearten us. Whether it be a piece of crockery that the family used, a cake tin with your favourite cake in or a gadget that your grandmother swore by, it can make a statement. These are just a few of our favourite pieces: Blow butter churn, Pearsons bread crock, terracotta dairy bowl or pancheon.
