Bread boards
Like the carved wood handles of bread knives, carved bread boards were frequently works of art. Some had sheaves of wheat or leaves carved on them, others had sayings like Our Daily Bread or even just Bread.
They make beautiful vintage centre-pieces for period kitchens, so much so that people sometimes hate to use them.
Bread boards could also be much simpler with a carved border or fluted edge. Sometimes they also came with a silver or silver plate base for added table appeal.
By the sixties bread boards were largely rectangular - some with integral serated knives snuggly fitting into the edge of the board. Sometimes manufacturers kept the simple round shape but used teak instead.
