Spice racks & tins
Where would we be without our cloves or nutmegs ? Centuries ago spice was very precious and the casks and the boxes they were stored in reflected their value.
Even by Victorian times they were kept in black japaned boxes - often trimmed with gold and red. The round boxes were seperated into compartments with some having a central nutmeg grater. Other tins were like a little chest with half a dozen little tins inside.
Most manufacturers of tin canisters such as Handiware, Tala and Worcesterware produced co-ordinated spice tins. Most were still made from tin, but increasingly aluminium became a popular modernist alternative.
Spice racks started to emerge in the fifties, with jars replacing tins during the sixties.
More vintage spice racks can be found in our Taunton Vale and Worcesterware ranges.
