Timers & thermometers

Precision in cooking extends from measuring ingredients to making sure they are cooked for the correct length of time or at the right temperature. Even a modest egg timer has its uses !

Checking that a joint is cooked through requiries a meat thermometer, whilst a timer could tell you exactly when to get it out of the oven.

The boil temperature for sweet and jam making is crucial for the right set. We have some great vintage brass ones by Brannen, although our favourite is an unusual white enamel one made by Taylors.

Bottling was a favourite method of preserving until freezers were invented, and Brannen made long tins thermometers which could reach to the bottom of a large Kilner jar.
